The Northern Rivers is located in the Northeastern part of NSW. The area is known for its bountiful natural beauty, featuring lush rainforests, picturesque beaches and scenic rivers. Here, I'll share a guide to some of my favourite natural attractions in the Northern Rivers.
Take your picnic blankets, drinks and a platter to Norries Headland, also known as "Caba Headland." A great place for enjoying the sunset or the observing the skilled local surfers. A Staircase up to the headland leads to a wooden viewing platform, this offers a prime vantage point for whale watching between May and November.
No need to visit the Giants Causeway in Ireland, this natural phenomenon is happening in our own backyard. Lava flowed from the now extinct volcano Mount Warning. The lava cooled from the outside towards the inside and cracks developed, forming the unique hexagonal shape. The columns are vertical as the lava flowed in horizontally and cooled from top to bottom.
Kingscliff is a beautiful town to visit and there is nothing quite like a dip in Cudgen Creek on high-tide. The creek flows into Kingscliff Beach, the water is calm and boasts a breathtaking turquoise hue. It's the perfect spot for snorkelling, kayaking and swimming.
Byron Bay Lighthouse sits atop a rugged headland on the most Easterly point of Australia. There are spectacular views of where the sheer cliffs meet the sea. This walk is intertwined with rainforests, beaches and gorgeous coastal vegetation. Dolphins and whales can often be seen frolicking, if you time your visit right.
I was lucky enough to call this region home for ten years and I can attest to the abundant natural wonders found in the Northern Rivers. I hope you enjoy discovering the beaches, hinterlands and surrounds.
Happy Coasting!
