In the 70's, Byron Bay was known as a hippy haven, many came in search of the natural beauty and laid-back lifestyle. Fast-forward to more recent times and the laid-back lifestyle remains, however, prices have surged as the wealthy move in, searching for their own slice of paradise. The economic disparity has driven locals out. Tourists are also skipping the crowds and considering alternate holiday plans. It begs the question, where to next? Could it be the lush, green town of Bellingen? Coast Along with me as I scope out both of these towns.

Byron Bay

I was lucky enough to spend two months at the very beautiful and very popular coastal town Byron Bay. Located on the far-north coast of NSW. It didn't take long to see why this pocket of the world was so well loved.

My days off were spent surfing, whale and dolphin watching, venturing into rainforests, perusing the unique clothing stores and savouring the local food scene.

My next contract was located on the mid north coast. A 3 hour drive south of Byron and I had arrived in Bellingen.

Bellingen

Bellingen is a small town many have claimed to be a "beachless Byron." It is set upon the Bellingen River, just a stones throw away from Dorrigo National Park. Bellingen is located on waterfall way, home to the cascading waterfalls Ebor Falls and Dangar Falls. The beautiful heritage buildings that line the street of Bellingen contain vintage stores, cafes and bookshops.

We hiked the 'Wonga Walk' in Dorrigo National Park, trekking amidst the the beauty of Tristania Falls and Crystal shower Falls. After the 6.6km loop through the subtropical rainforest, we headed to Bellingen for a well-earned lunch.

So is it the next Byron Bay?

Byron Bay and Bellingen share many similarities, primarily centred around their community essence and shared bohemian vibes, however, in drawing comparisons between the two towns it overshadows the unique qualities that set them apart. The towns are undoubtedly attractive destinations and I have had a great time exploring both.

When contemplating your next getaway, take a moment to decide whether you're craving coastal vibes or tranquil rainforests.

If you've already experienced the hustle and bustle of Byron Bay previously, I suggest a journey southward to the charming town of Bellingen.

Happy Coasting!
