Ted and I traveled north to escape the winter blues, and discovered the welcoming warmth of Darwin's dry season. In our stay so far, we have already marvelled at numerous sunsets. It brought back memories of my childhood spent here, watching the sky turn orange, red and pink as the sun sets over the ocean horizon. During our sunset gazing, we have noticed that once the sun starts to set, it waits for no one—it's quick! Let's explore why the sunsets are so beautiful here, why they are fast setting and where to view the best iconic Darwin sunsets.
The dry-season in Darwin is conducive to better sunsets as there is less cloud coverage, this and the relatively flat landscape allow for complete and unobstructed views. While humidity and dust might usually be seen as negatives, they actually enhance sunsets by scattering sunlight and amplifying the orange, red, and pink hues. The ocean reflects these stunning colours, adding to the sky's beauty. Additionally, Darwin has lower light pollution compared to other urban areas, making the sunsets even more pronounced.
Darwin's proximity to the equator means that the sun sets almost directly down into the horizon, this creates a more vivid transition from day to night as the sun is taking a shorter path. The shorter paths result in shorter twilight periods, enhancing the intensity of the sunset.
Now lets look at where to view these breath-taking sunsets:
Sip cocktails and float around in the infinity pools as the sun-sets over the stunning Mindil Beach. Alternatively, visit the Mindil Beach Markets and head down to the beach for sunset, to view the mesmerising pink sky.
My personal favourite spot for an ocean dip or a sunset picnic nestled on top of the large rocks.
Grab a ginger beer and some dinner! The trailer boat club is the perfect spot to watch the sun go down over the ocean.
I hope everyone gets to enjoy the sunsets in Darwin dry-season, they truly are one of a kind and I pinch myself every night. These sunsets are fleeting! Like many things in life, blink and you'll miss it.
Happy Coasting!
